The only thing that doesn’t disgust me on that placard is the bottom line. Men of the world grow up! Mothers and fathers, quit teaching your sons sexist stereotypes as fact. More than anything else bring children up to understand and practice empathy.

Agreed! All too often parents are leaving it up to the baby sitters, schools, TV, movies and their peers to teach their children all of life’s lessons. Children are going to make mistakes along the way, but without the right tools and information, there will be many more with greater, graver consequences. Murderers and rapists all start out as sweet, innocent babies. We need to start when they are young, teach them all, and teach them well.

Seriously. What is the deal. I remember once in college my professor asked anyone who had been sexually harassed to walk across the room. It was that moment that I realized I was actually a victim, because for so long I thought it was all my fault. I never saw it more clearly, and walking across the room felt like letting it go. This resonates with me so much, especially considering my future as a teacher. Thanks for sharing.

All too ofter parents have a hard enough time just having “The Talk” much less talking about rape, date rape, sexual harassment, molestation… and when they do have such talks they come in the form of “don’t let that happen to you” and rarely in the context of “this is unexceptionable behavior for anyone including you”. I say start ’em as young as possible, teaching them the value of loving, caring, sharing, kindness, compassion, empathy… and continue throughout their lives. They’re not just lessons, they’re ways of life.

I’m sorry to hear you have to wear a red “V” for victim (all too many of us do) next to your green “V” for vegan. I truly believe that as the number of green Vs goes up, the number of red Vs will go down. It’s not just about diet choices, but life choices as well. (((((HUGS)))))
