Ask A Trucker: Home Edition

Here are a couple of questions from one curious reader that landed in the ? A Trucker mail bag on August 22nd, 2008.  Both are home related hence the title of this installment.  Both good questions that I never saw coming.  Check ‘em out:

  • Q #1:

What kind of home do you have at home.  For instance, is it a home in a development with other similar homes, a mobile home in a park, a ranch on some acreage, a condo or townhouse, etc.  I’m not asking to judge you or anything – I’m just trying to gauge how much I would miss home being away for so long and only there for three days at a time.  If it were me, I would figure since more time was spent in the truck that I wouldn’t actually want to spend much on a physical “home” and maybe just have a condo or mobile home.

  • A:

I live in a manufactured home.  It is on one acre of land in an area where two homes are allowed on each property, and each property in the area is right around one acre.  Most everyone has two homes on their land including us.  Here is a floor plan of our home:

The land and the home was bought before we become truckers.  If it were up to me I’d sell it all and just be homeless until we decide to give up trucking.  Can you imagine how much money we would be saving?  A bunch.  But it’s not up to me.  There are two of us, and a unanimous decision is needed.

The bottom line, we miss it greatly.

  • Q #2:

Who takes care of home for you when you aren’t there, like mowing lawns or picking up mail, checking for burglaries, etc.  Do you have a neighbor or family friend do it?  I am so nosy but I just don’t have a clue how I’d handle things like that.  I don’t know if you would want a neighbor to take care of it or if you just wouldn’t want anyone to even know when you were on the road.  Wow – so many things to think about.

  • A:

It’s a big house and when we bought it we had family in mind.  The master bedroom is ours, obviously.  Bedroom #2 is where Bunny’s mom and dad reside.  Bedroom #3 is their computer room.  Bedroom #4 is where one of Bunny’s brothers resided.  I mentioned that there is a second home on the land, and that is where Bunny’s sister lives.  So as you can see, we don’t have much to worry about as far as our home is concerned while we are out of town.  They all take good care of the place and our pets (one cat, one snake) while we are gone.

Wow! That really IS a big house! It is actually a great layout for your family though! The two family areas (living and family room) plus the adult retreat (I will let my imagination have fun with that one) are well planned spaces and so are the bathroom set ups. With all that family, I guess I would feel safe leaving home for those trips too. I’m glad you don’t have to worry about that stuff. And thanks for telling me who lives in the other house on the property because that was definitely gonna be my next question. I warned you I was nosy. LOL. And I’m sure I’ll have more questions to ask in the future! I need to go answer your question at my blog now, while I’m sitting here.

A lot of searching went into finding that house. We knew what we wanted I we figured it had to be out there. Just a matter of tracking it down. ;) You’re not nosy. You’re curious. :D Great questions.

This is so cool! I love seeing where you live… and the fact that you have all of your wife’s family living with you.. shows what a great guy you truly are.

Well I’m glad you enjoyed the tour. ;) Me? A great guy? Is it that obvious? :P Thanks Girly. :D

I never did understand how a snake could be considered a pet. Do your inlaws go and buy mice to feed the snake? Aren’t mice better pets than snakes?

I don’t like mice, but the snake does. :P Mice stink and bite. Snakes just bite, but not very often, and when they do it’s not as bad as a mouse bit. ;) They buy her rats. Snakes make way better pets than mice, rats and fish combined. Really they are better than most any pet. What other pet can you get away with only feeding once a month?

Interesting questions! I do think that Truckers are a special breed of people. Like police and firemen. Like – you have to love the job to do it you know? So many things that have to be given up and yet…there are people that love doing it anyway.

I have to be honest – I don’t know if I’d be able to do it. Kudos to you Spidey and of course, Bunny.

Personally, I’m not sure how much longer we can continue doing it. It’s definitely wearing on us. We’re both very close to our families. As much as we like the job (both of us feel it’s the best job we’ve ever had) we fear all that we are missing and can never get back.

Family living just like I am involved in. Only Sarah would never let her brother live here.

We babysat for a rather large python for a couple of months when Sarah was in high school. I used to throw the mouse in and then run so I wouldn’t hear it squeal. I’d go in her room when she was doing homework and the snake would be sleeping in her lap.

The arrangement definitely presents it’s challenges, but we make it work. :) I don’t think I could handle my brother living with us either. :?
